We love all the Terry Deary books. My sons read them all (my sons are now in 7th and 9th grades) as they do great summaries of key points and offering stunning and gross tidbits to really make it easy to remember those key elements. This is how to LEARN history as you really remember it this way.

I read these series of books as a kid, and I got to say even after so many years, i still remember the funny style I learned Greek mythology and the mythology itself. Nothing was forgotten. As I grew older and had to study mythology in class, I was the smart one who knew a thing or two about mythology. Because of these books. I'm 21 now and god, I kept my copies of this collection. Even after how may years, i want to read them again.

Very extensive book, too much information for a quit consult at your clinic, the good thing about this book is the access to the e-version of the book, pretty cool, but guess what it doesn't grant you access, it did one time but the next time that I went to use it, it didn't work, so I called ELSEVIER customer service and technical support and after a long talking they said that they didn't have any book code in record that matched with my book code, or any of my log in information or my email, nothing in record, unbelievable, and instructed me to call amazon for an answer, so don't get too exciting with the e-version of the book because this might happen to you too. I don't recommend this book for a daily consult at your clinic unless the e-version works.

Great if you're planning to make a ton of soap to begin with...

I think this book won't help too many beginning/novice soap makers. The process is only slightly more complicated than cold process soap making, and the way it's explained, it's not very intimidating. Just more steps, and more ingredients.

However, my main complaint (and why it isn't the best for beginners) is that all of the recipes make commercial-size batches of soap (author mentions that recipes make 50-60 "average sized" bars of soap). This is great when you're making soap to sell or want to do a lot for holiday gifts, but for your first time making transparent soap it could lead to a LOT of wasted ingredients (if you miss or mess up a step).

For future editions, I'd like to see at least one beginner recipe that makes just 1-2 pounds of soap with this process, to familiarize readers with it on a smaller scale with less risk. Otherwise I think the book is easy to read and the directions seem easy to follow. The author also gives good advice on buying your ingredients to avoid spending more money than necessary, particularly for the alcohol needed as a solvent in the later steps (hint: if you buy it from the liquor store, you'll likely overpay).

Best soap-making book on the market.

I bought this book several years ago and it is the best soap-making book I've found. The instructions are simple and easy to follow and the different ingredients used are explained perfectly. I had made soap many times before I bought this book and I used to use the cold-process method. My soap was good, but it takes several weeks for cold-process soap to complete it's chemical reaction. After it's cured, if it is stored for any length of time it shrinks and so it doesn't look as good then. Also, the cold-process soaps I made tended to be somewhat soft and would be used up rather quickly. All of those problems disappeared with the soaps made from this book's recipes. The recipes call for alcohol. After experimenting with several kinds of alcohol, I settled on using EverClear. It smells good in the soap, and doesn't dry the skin, contrary to what one might think. The EverClear costs more than the cheapest vodka, but the results are dramatically better. When I went to the Chemical store (it's in the city where I live) to buy the scents and bulk supplies, the chemist said that clear soap can't be made at home because it had to cooked under pressure and that it would take a genius to figure out how to do it. He wanted to sell me the melt-and-pour soap base, and I felt like he'd challenged me, so I went home and made transparent soap with this book and it turned out great. Yes, the soap is cooked under pressure, but all it takes is following the instructions in the book where a sheet of plastic is bungeed over the soap-making pot and that pot is placed inside a bigger pot of boiling water. After cooking for a time, the soap is poured into molds and is ready to use as soon as it cools and hardens. This is the hot-process and the soap is very thin when it is ready to be poured into the molds. This makes it very easy to mold well (no tapping out air pockets) but your molds must be water-tight. Regular soap molds work well, but home-made loaf-type molds need to be lined so they don't leak. My sister has the first book I bought and won't give it back, so I am buying another one.

I love this book

I love this book. Highly recommend it to beginners. Recipes are easy. If you want to make a transparent soap and are looking for a helpful reassures, buy this book. I have tried different recipes, and all my attempts was not successful. However, after I have made transparent soap by Catherine's Failor recipes I have got perfect transparent soap at the first try with good soap qualities. Very, very helpful.

Only for real fans

Ok I'm a geek. I go to Outpost31.com and I never miss the film. I waited for the prequel like people line up for Black Thursday sales. So if you are a geek like me and REALLY LOVE the Carpenter film, this is for you. An interesting find and fun to see the author's take on different aspects of the film. This is one guy who actually loves the film more than I do! But if you are just a normal Sci/Fi and Horror movie buff...this will be TMI for you. So be warned.

Near-bibilical status
By not a natural
The second edition of this texbook by Raudenbush and Bryk has achieved near-biblical status in the world of multi-level modeling. It is quite comprehensive, and the chapter on centering, an unexpectedly important and complex topic, is the best I"ve seen.

Nevertheless, Raudenbush and Bryk make what I take to be a serious error when they fail to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses and breadth and limitations of their likely audience. For all but the best trained mathematical statisticians, this book is inaccessible and, for the reader, money poorly spent. Raudenbush and Bryk must know that most sociologists, political scientists, program evaluators, policy analysts, and numerous others will find their book too difficult to use as a self-teaching tool. Thus, in fairness to those trying to keep up with important methodological developments, the authors should, at the very least, conspicuously acknowledge the demands their book places on the reader.

For most readers, there are much better ways to a make a start on multilevel modeling. If one wants to, he or she can then work toward meeting the demands imposed by Raudenbush and Bryk.

Excellent reference, but not for beginners

Raudenbush & Bryk's text is a must-have reference for those who use hierarchical models in professional research, but not the best introduction for beginners. As others have said, it is extremely dense at times, but I don't necessarily see that as a drawback as long as readers are aware of what they need to know in advance. For those with a solid foundation in general linear modeling (i.e. all the various forms of regression, MANCOVA, etc.), as well as some basic knowledge of what hierarchical models can do, this is the right book for you. If not, choose something more basic and work your way up. That said, HLM is not as daunting as it may seem at first, and those who do research in multiple settings simultaneously now have little excuse for "cutting corners" by simply throwing in covariates or assuming homogeneity, no matter how many variables look the same.

By far, the greatest improvement since the first edition is the extended discussion of HLM in longitudinal designs. Raudenbush & Bryk are at the cutting-edge here, and anyone who does growth-curve analysis will find this book to be a great resource. On the downside, their discussion of the unique factors to take into account in 3-level models is a bit sparse (and the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5).

I return to this book constantly, and strongly recommend it to those who do (or, more often, should) take a wider, more accurate accounting of the many possible sources of variance in their research.

If you want to learn HLM, this book will not help you.

The book is not bad. But need so much improvement. I send a letter to the authors with my comments.
For example:

A basic topic such as "assumptions" is not clear presented. You have to "discover" them on your reading.

You will find things like "as we can see this will create a problem" ok. but what kind of problem, why are these a problem?

I got the book, and for each chapter I read, I had to go online to look for additional information, and clarifications.

It is clear that the authors are experts and the topic, and things are "so clear and obvious" for them, but the people that is reading the book might have problem following it.

Conclusion. After 2 weeks I decided to return the NEW book and get a USED one.

I also got the "manual" for the HLM6 software, dont bother. It is not a good manual. Actually, it is not a manual because it does not teach you how to use the software, it does not explain its different options, it just show you some examples. You can find similar things online. I returned the manual as well.

Excelent!!

This is a great product. Seriously I've been looking for something like this for a long time. It's easy to follow, understand and practice. I've also tried the Betty series and I found them quite complicated and overwhelming sometimes, but the approach of this autor is the best. I got both the "grammar in use" and "vocabulary in use" as well.

more comfortable for the advanced speaker

I had students whom I was tutoring who felt too challenged by the High Intermediate book, so they got this one (so I got one) and I'm working w/ it with them. It's more comfortable for them, yet still enough new material for them to learn from it. I have all levels of Vocabulary in Use, and I've been happy with them all. I like working w/ them, I like the progression of words and exercises. Good resource to enhance the lessons.

About the Author

Paolo J. Knill is one of the founders of the expressive arts therapy program at Lesley University, USA and is the Provost of the European Graduate School (EGS) in Switzerland, which offers MA and PhD degrees in expressive arts therapy. Ellen G. Levine and Stephen K. Levine are co-founders of the ISIS-Canada training programme in expressive arts therapy. Ellen is the Dean of Independent Study in expressive arts therapy, education, and consulting at the EGS and Stephen is the Dean of the Doctoral Programme.

All three authors have published extensively in the field, with two of their works, Foundations of Expressive Arts Therapy and Poiesis, published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
