Often dismissed as a nineteenth-century curiosity, spiritualism influenced the radical social and political movements of its time. Believers filled the ranks of the Free Democrats, agitated for land and monetary reform, fought for abolition, and held egalitarian leanings that found powerful expression in campaigns for gender and racial equality. In Free Spirits , Mark A. Lause considers spiritualism as a political and cultural force in Civil War-era America. Lause reveals the scope, spread, and influence of the movement, both in its links to reformist causes and its ability to amplify previously marginalized voices. Rooting spiritualism's appeal in the crises of the time, Lause considers how spiritualist influences, through the distillation of the war, forced reassessments of the question of Radical Republicanism and radicalism in general. He also delves into unexplored areas such as the movement's role in Lincoln's reelection and the relationship between Native Americans and spiritualists.

Review
There is virtually no scholarship on the influence and counter-influence of spiritualism and politics. The fresh insights on Lincoln, who is generally protected from any real alliance with spiritualism by virtue of his 'difficult' wife, is a great contribution, as are the messages from the southern dead.--Cathy Gutierrez, author of Plato's Ghost: Spiritualism in the American Renaissance
"Opens a door between works that consider spiritualism as a purely religious phenomenon and works that deal with the history of the reform movements of the time in purely political or economic terms. By developing this thesis, Lause shows how limited previous treatments of progressive reform have been."--John B. Buescher, author of The Remarkable Life of John Murray Spear: Agitator for the Spirit Land

Simply a great social history
By Mark Newbold
Simply a great social history! We are witness to a revival of interest among historians in reexamining Spiritualism and its impact on society. Long ignored by academics as unworthy of study, Mark A. Lause's book goes toward remedying this by examining primary sources and providing a panoramic view of the impact Spiritualism had on American society in the mid-19th century. Spiritualists were the psychonauts of consciousness exploration, and pioneers in progressive movements that sought to make America a more egalitarian society. I don't think we realize today the significant impact Spiritualism had on American society, this influence for the good extended from education, women's rights, abolition, prison reform, care for the mentally ill, child labor reform, and nursing. In some small pockets it deviated into some silly ventures, such as free love communes, failed efforts at intentional communities, wrong headed dietary and clothing reform. Yet it's commitment to societal reform that uplifted all people is its enduring legacy.
The Civil War tested the mettle of American society, and Spiritualists stepped up to serve in the military as well as assist on the home front to alleviate the suffering and deprivation of thousands. It must be understood that President and Mrs. Lincoln, though not members of any Spiritualist movement were among those seeking to understand the mysteries of consciousness, attending and even hosting sances at the White House, President Lincoln's compassion and tenacity in the struggle were inspired in part by spiritualist literature and advisors.
Dr. Stephan Hoeller, has characterized religious movements as either revelatory, which identifies a divine event that occurred at some remote point in human history and all exoteric expressions of that event throughout time are mere variations & commentaries on this singular event This leads to a static world view. The other religious expression Hoeller identifies as gnostic, in which the divine is ever present and revealing itself through the communion of God and humankind. This leads to an world view rich in possibilities of progress and edification. Spiritualism is certainly gnostic in that regard. As Swedenborg observed, "Conscience is God's presence in man." Spiritualists fully grasped that idea, and felt in it a calling to become the 'better Angels of our nature' and in turn transform society into a better place for all.
Adding this work as well as Ann Braude's work, "Radical Spirits: Spiritualism and Women's Rights in 19th Century America, provides a sound foundation for understanding this movement.
Highly recommended.
