RedKnife (Skin Walkers Book 2), by Susan Bliler

Cindy Sambrano hates her life. She lives in a crappy little house, drives a crappy little car, and has a crappy younger brother, Cody. After their parents’ death, she feels compelled to take care of him, to try to keep him on the straight and narrow, but--as usual--he’s messed up again. Owing a huge debt some seriously bad dudes, Cindy’s brother needs help getting the cash. His plan? Rob Cindy’s employer, Monroe StoneCrow. Cindy has no intentions of following through. Her true plan is to work triple and quadruple shifts to help earn the money to pay off Cody’s debt. Hell, she’s even willing to go so far as to take up the offered employee housing on the Estate to save on rent and gas. She just needs to string her brother along long enough to keep him from doing something stupid until she can dig them out of debt.

Problem? Of course there is.

CEO and Dominant Walker, Monroe StoneCrow, receives information from his Sentry, RedKnife KillsPrettyEnemy, that convinces the CEO that Ms. Sambrano has ulterior motives at StoneCrow and could be working with the Walkers’ enemy faction, the Megalya. Too late, RedKnife realizes that he’s put Cindy’s life in jeopardy with his inadvertent misinformation. Knowing the CEO won’t back down, it’s up to RedKnife to steal Cindy from the Dominant Walker and hide her until he can prove two things: One, her innocence to Monroe, and two, he needs to show Cindy that she is his One.

About the Author
My pack territory is in Central Montana, between Stone Crow estates and the North Fortress. Born and raised in an untamed location that bridges the gap between rolling prairies and majestic mountain peaks, I am born to a family that also bridges the gap between cultures. My father’s people boast a fiercely proud Scottish ancestry while my mother’s tribes descend from two savagely beautiful and unique nations that inspire my Skin Walkers series. I'm a huge fan of MMA, boxing, hockey, 30 Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park, DMX, the Killers, and 21 Pilots (“sometimes quiet is violent”). I also love to read because it encourages me to write. (I hate it when authors add that they love coffee and chocolate. Really? Who doesn't love coffee and chocolate?) Anyway, I love beer...kidding. I don't love beer but we are engaged in a very serious relationship. (Mom, please don't call me when you read this.) Check me out at www.susanbliler.com Please leave feedback. Believe it or not I actually read your opinions/suggestions and try to adapt my work accordingly. A’hau.

A pleasant read
By Bookfanatic
This was not the best in the Skin Walkers series, but it was an entertaining read. I thought it needed more dramatic tension, and there were a couple of unaddressed issues. Overall, I'd rate this 3.5 stars.

SPOILER ALERT! Why was the female mate afflicted, when everyone says it's the male that's afflicted? This was not properly explained other than a suggestion that perhaps Redknife had pushed it onto his mate. Also, Redknife realized the doctor was drugging the males (with a chemical designed to hinder affliction/mate recognition) when no one else did. Why didn't he confront the doctor (once he settled to his satisfaction that Monroe was unaware), or why didn't he tell Monroe?
END SPOILERS.

For those who are interested, Ms. Bliler seems to be jumping around in the timeline of this series. Although this is the 7th Skin Walker book she's written, in the series internal chronology, this is the 2nd book. If you go to her website, you'll find the following list.
1. King -- published Oct 2013
2. RedKnife -- Feb 2015
3. Bishop -- planned work
4. Mason -- planned work
5. Conn -- Aug 2012
6. Leto -- Apr 2013
7. Monroe -- Aug 2013
8. Guage -- Feb 2014
9. York -- May 2014
10. Remy -- planned work
11. Legion -- planned work
12. Tyce -- planned work

The editing in the book was not too bad, and I noticed in the book credits that Ms. Bliler actually paid for an editing service. I truly appreciate when an author ensures that her work is professionally edited, as nothing ruins my enjoyment of a story more than jarring mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. (It truly annoys me to pay good money for a book that is poorly edited. I feel that the author who can't be bothered to professionally edit his work is disrespecting and cheating his/her readers. It can't be that hard to find someone who has good grammar and spelling skills. Talk to any high school English teacher.)

However, as I said, Ms. Bliler actually DID hire an editing service, and the few errors present in the book probably won't bother a lot of people. But even so, I think she should find a new editor. It is NOT sufficient for an editing service merely to run spell check. The author can do that herself. I counted about 10 errors, that while they were all spelled correctly, were nonetheless incorrect. For example there were a couple of possessive nouns (Walker's) that should have been plural (Walkers). There was a "no" instead of "not," "employee" that should have been "employ," "closed to her head" that should have been "close to her head," "fire wood" instead of "firewood," "his+" instead of "his," "affected" instead of "afflicted," "breath" which should have been "breathe," and a scene where it mentioned that the heroine's hands were "secured" behind her back, but then she's using her hands a few minutes later. Huh? All these errors could have been spotted simply by reading the manuscript, rather than just running spell check, which clearly, Ms. Bliler's editor failed to do. Okay, I'll climb down off my soapbox now. :-)

All in all, I'd recommend this book and this series. I enjoy Ms. Bliler's worldbuilding, and I think she has a winner in this series.

Very abrupt ending
By Kindle Customer
I felt the story was actually one of the better ones in this series. It has a great journey of both characters that really pulled me in and had me feeling like I was living it with both of them. Just when everything got moving and the action started it was over. Like literally over in the middle of what was an important plot feature to the story. I loved the story, but was extremely disappointed and even confused at how the author could just stop so much that I gave it a 3 star rating. It almost seems like she got interrupted and forgot to come back to finish the story.

RedKnife
By Michelle
The Skin Walker series is always an enjoyable reading experience. The characters are well written and reoccur often in each others stories.. and not only as bit players. As a reader, I've grown to care about them. Susan writes that way, she introduces characters in such a way that you miss them when the story ends. But she always includes enough fleshed out characters, that I look forward to them and their stories. I wanted to read Monroe's story when I read Conns, and I've want to read RedKnife's story about as long. I also like how the books jump around. We got Conn first and that was book 5 in series timeline, where RedKnife is the latest edition in the series and it is book 2 in the series timeline. So we know more about what is happening to the characters in book 2 than we did in book 5. It makes for an interesting read.

I have been waiting for RedKnife's book for what seems like forever, and Susan Bliler did not disappoint. As soon as I saw it listed, it was being downloaded and read. I LOVED getting a look into the mind of RedKnife and how his thought process works. He's always been the mysterious Skin Walker. The one we knew had way more power than the others. To see him fall for a cute and sassy bartender.. priceless!

Cindy is full of spunk and never fails to throw RedKnife off his game. Its more than worth the price just to experience that. Despite being constantly dealt a horrible hand, she plays the game of life as best as she can with a smile. But honestly, she's better at helping others than she is herself. Its part of who she is. Enter RedKnife, the loner Skin Walker. After Cindy does something unexpectedly nice for RedKnife, he is confused and a little thrown off his game. Then after he gets her in trouble, he suddenly finds himself wanting to take care of Cindy.

And so begins another awesome love story in the Skin Walker series. It is truly a unique and epic series that is well worth the read. I own every one on kindle and am buying the series on paperback as they are released. This is a story I want on my bookcase. Each can be read separate, or in numbered order, but I recommend reading them in order as they were released (Conn, Leto, Monroe, King, Gauge, York, RedKnife).

I was not given anything for this review, I have bought all the books released so far in this series and enjoyed them so much I wanted to tell others.
