I won't get into the story except to say that it's one of the better ones, and that any Batman / Joker fan (and anyone else who enjoys good stories) should definitely read it if they haven't already. This is a copy worth buying, even if you already own the softback, and keeping in your collection. I bought this, again, after seeing the trailers for the upcoming animated version this summer - I got excited and wanted a newer, more substantial version.

The print is amazing, with vibrant, dark colors and artstyle, and exactly how it was originally portrayed. The hardcover, under the sleeve, is embossed and quite nice. The binding is immaculate, and much easier to preserve than a comic book - you can read this without worrying about wrecking it. The jacket art is, in my opinion, one of the selling points, as it starts quite the conversation if guests see it sitting out.

I'm glad I purchased it, and would be willing to do so again if something happened to the copy I own. I've included some photos of the quality construction of the book. Obviously, as with any story, whether you like it or not is up to you, but the quality of the product itself is unquestionable.

One Bad Day

What does one say about Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s THE KILLING JOKE that hasn’t been said? Recently it’s come back under the comic-book-reading-public’s scrutiny due to a certain recent internet crap-storm over a certain controversial comic-book cover relating to one of it’s key plot points. I’ll get that out of the way by saying that the huffy indignation over the book’s extreme content is misplaced, as are shoe-horned dialogues over all-too-real social issues, and its relation to/”depiction of” real-life horrors. As to what happens to Barbara...I can see those associations, for sure, though that particular grimmest, ugliest interpretation is largely read-into-matters, with little if anything in the presented images and text to support the argument that that’s what happened. If you keep up with this sort of thing, you know what I mean. The grim proceedings remain disturbing, though nowhere near as graphic or over-the-line as you might have been led to believe.

Taken on its own terms as a work of storytelling, the problem with THE KILLING JOKE now isn’t (mostly) in the work itself, but how in the years since, more importance and gravity have been thrown on its slender back than it was ever meant to hold. Someone reading it for the first time now, following its reputation, could easily be left going, “Huh?”As a brief 80‘s superhero/supervillain/psychological-horror comic, it holds up well, a graphic-novella, maybe the length of two individual issues. The story is simple but effective: The Joker makes it crueler and more personal than ever for Batman, Batgirl, and Gordon, in the name of proving the point of his deranged, nihilistic world view, intercut with flashbacks of the Joker’s tragic origins (Christopher Nolan clearly yanked a lot of ideas straight from this, fleshed them out and refined them for his and Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker in the film THE DARK KNIGHT). The artwork is holds up best of all -- stunning and haunting in places -- as harrowing and macabre. At the time, the presentation and the grim, extreme themes dealt with were groundbreaking for a mainstream comic, introducing a lot of ideas and approaches no one had seen before, revitalizing a getting-tired era. Compared to what’s become common-place since, not to mention meatier, similarly acclaimed, groundbreaking works of the same day, it’s just not as fresh or shocking as it used to be. In some places, it now feels, if anything, a tad quaint.

How the writing does/doesn’t hold up: virtually everything to do with exploring the Joker’s character-arc/outlook on life, and how his maniacal plan unfolds before the reader, remains pretty brilliant. Some of his wicked monologues belong in the audition-books of aspiring actors trying out for villain roles. Its the heroes’ side of things where it now feels thin, underdeveloped, and ultimately unconvincing. The un-fleshed-out briefness of the work is part of the problem, though really, this is a story where the bad guy is the true protagonist, who the author is clearly most fascinated by/invested in, and his heart’s just nor really in it with the good guys. I don’t for a minute buy Gordon’s demand of “We have to show him that our way works!” or Batman’s final attempts to reason with the Joker. Even complaints of Barbara/Batgirl being reduced to a “woman-in-refrigerator" victim-plot-device (the one caveat I’ll grant the recent detractors) might have been fixed were her traumatic experience and its aftermath given just a bit more breathing room. One senses Moore was hampered on this end both by length-restriction and DC editorial policies of the day regarding the handling of their most lucrative characters, so they come off a bit like morose self-parody...More would go on to explore some of these ideas with more freedom in WATCHMEN.

So yeah, THE KILLING JOKE, still worth a read for Batman/Joker fans, to be sure, though whether you’re picking it up for the first time or nostalgically revisiting it, I recommend subduing your expectations.

You're going mad

Great price for a great book. You can never go wrong when buying a book written by Alan Moore. The man is a genius. He knows how to take something and flip it on its ears and make us see it a way it's never been seen before. I'm definitely biased towards him as a storyteller because "Watchmen" is my fifth favorite book of all time. I can read anything he's written and still be infatuated with his tales.
I don't want to give too much away to those that have not read the story before. All you really need to know is this is one of the most pinnacle stories in Batman's universe you will ever read. It's not a multiple chapter graphic novel; it's a single issue story, 46 pages long. It has tons of re-readable value. The inking you see here is not the same as from when it was published. Instead, Brian Bolland has colored it the way he originally envisioned it to be visually told, drawing your attention to certain items in famous scenes and flashbacks.
For $10 you cannot beat this deal and you won't regret it either.

Great Review of Woodstock Events and People

I've been studyingWoodstock 1969: The Origins, Audience, and Impact of a Countercultural Festival while reading "Nation of Outliers" by Grace Hale from U.Va. who builds her analysis of the blues and rhythm history and its movements through Festivals often referencing back to the Newport festivals which were highly organized, well financed, and well managed. Grace Hale follows the Andrew Gentes rigidity of referencing the news articles at the time but when discussing Woodstock Hale misses out on many details and their sociological and political implications for probably one of the biggest festivals that occurred. Gentes for example spells out the importance of the NM Hog Farm hippies in helping to provide food, life support, and security, along with the role law enforcement played in keeping the Peace. My only criticism of Gentes work is that he could have presented more about why the Woodstock festival was not held at Woodstock (the local health officials discouraged it), and how the local roads into Woodstock in Ulster county off of the NY Thruway at Exit 19 to Rt 28, and rt 212 where blockaded to prevent crowds from gathering there. Plus one other minor detail in getting the festival out of Walkill in Ulster county, again, local public health law that the Privy's being built on the site were inadequate. Notwithstanding these minor details Gentes is a necessary read to more fully understand how Woodstock does not fully fit Hale's thesis.

Finally, we have an authoritative and complete book on Soviet orders and medals............This book will absolutely be the "bible" for collectors of Soviet orders and medals, and that is only to be expected. However, it will also open up the field to new collectors as well by giving them information not previousely available and by reducing - if not eliminating - the risk of getting stung by bad material. The "reference" on Soviet Faleristics

The fall of the Iron Curtain allowed the collectors of orders and decorations to buy Soviet "signs of honour" at very reasonable prices (many of us remember what the price of a Red Banner order was in the '70s!). The main problem to collectors was where to obtain informations. Most books were (and still are) written in Russian and the linguistical barrier was another thick "curtain"; more, the defect of Soviet reference books was that any topic was "filtered" through ideology, and who wasn't provided with a big sense of humour wouldn't appreciate them fully. I am one of the lucky ones having no problems at all into reading russian but, when this book was published, I've looked for a copy immediately. All my expectations were fulfilled: this "guide" shows that the authors have a strong background, both historical and social, about the USSR, other than the enthusiasm of the true collectors. After having read it thoroughly, I can say that no "trade secret" was kept, and any useful details and informations were given. Each year, many books on orders and decorations are published, but most are just trying to fill gaps in this branch of the social studies (yes, I can honestly say that phaleristic could really be an aspect of sociology). This book actually fills a gap. It is interesting to know that some collectors from the former Soviet Union already appreciate this work highly. The details about fakes are very interesting, but like any reference about the "problem #1 of collecting", it is outdated in the same moment it comes out of the press. I think that "The Comprehensive Guide", in the future, will be a collection piece itself.

Simply the best.

This is the best book on medal collecting out there. Period. Combining detailed, color pictures, specific award criteria and a comprehensive thoroughness it easily outdistances any other medal collectors guide in *any* field (Third Reich, British, American, Imperial German (would that there was one even half as good as this)). Only Previtera's "The Iron Time" can match it in quality and "The Iron Time" is limited to investigating one award (The Prussian Iron Cross) so it has a very narrow focus despite it being a five star book in it's own right. Schmitt & McDaniel's book has set a very high bar that any "comprehensive" medal collector's book issued in the future will have a struggle to match. Not only that the publication of this book helps legitamize the collecting of the "evil empire's" awards unlike any other publication from the past. Well worth it's price.

The only one you'll need

If you have any interest in collecting Soviet orders and medals, this is the only book you'll need. Every other reference on this subject I've read isn't even close to this one in detail, information, history and variants. From the earliest days of the revolution to the fall of the USSR, this book has detailed info for them all.

My only complaint is that it's a bit outdated when describing known fakes. For example, for the Order of Nevsky (probably the one medal who's value is increasing the fastest) the author lists no known fakes of sufficient quality to consider. That may have been true then, but not today. I've seen fake Nevsky's that are completely indistinguishable from the real thing, even when compared side-by-side. If it's worth enough money, someone will fake it.

Wonderful Reference Book For Practicing Bodybuilder

As someone who has actually been tossing around the iron for longer than I personally like to admit (try 1960 on for size), I have always found this particular book to be a wonderful reference book for the practicing bodybuilder, one he or she can employ to solve persistent problems, answer a technical question, or browse in search of alternative exercises working a particular muscle group from a specific angle. For example, the fact that each exercise emphasizes not only how to correctly perform the exercise, but also stresses which aspects of the muscles are most stressed, hence which are likely to most benefit from regular use of the exercise in a complex routine.
There are many aspects of the book which could use to be revised to improve it, such as its reference to newer machines and new technology in general is a bit lacking, and it also is a bit dated in that it trades heavily on Weider's long association with famous bodybuilders of the classic period of the 1960s and 1970s. For old horses like me, that is neat, but it may not play well to some of the younger enthusiasts. Yet the fundamental facts found in the book are still quite credible, and the fact that it is a paperback issue you can actually drag along to the gym with you is to its credit. I recommend it for the reasons I mentioned, although I would also suggest you purchase a copy of Arnold's own version of a how-to manual, as well as Bill Pearl's superb "Keys To The Kingdom". The more recent Iron Man version is also an excellent resource, especially for the intermediate bodybuilder ready to spread his wings and intensify his workout. Enjoy!

Just Get The Book!

As an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist, I have to give this book a high recommendation. The beginner will get a good introduction to physique development. The more experienced will get ideas for adding variety to their programs. The photos are a bit misleading for the beginner - you'll never look like that unless you use drugs. However, all the technical information is good, and I like the presentation. This book is a real bargain!

Bodybuilding Knowledge galore!

I personally thought this book was a real winner. I have read this book many times cover to cover, yes this takes a while. I use it for reference all the time. It spells out exactly what and how to do all exercises. It also contains great photography of the stars in action. This also contains much information, many pages, great pictures, and pure content for the price. The only other book that is comparable is Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.
