About the Author
The late L�SZLO ROTH was chairperson of the Packaging Design Program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Now retired, GEORGE L. Best Packaging in 5 min or less.

This book takes all the stress out of figuring out how to put unique and traditional packages together and lets you focus on what interest you the most instead of fidling with technical details. Its easy to read, and has nice large illustrations. I have found it really easy to trace these illos in adobe illustrator instead of starting from scratch. It is thick and comprehensive. There are so many examples it is hard to find one that isn't in the book.

Make a package for anything

This incredible reference shows hundred of patterns for boxes, cartons, tubes, displays, etc. I don't mean "four sides and a bottom", though you have plenty of those. I mean things with internal dividers, things the hold together by themselves, decorative, utilitarian, and the entire range.

This book has an industrial orientation, as if you're planning a die-cut paper product. It also assumes that you're a fairly skilled designer. Although the patterns are given in full detail, you'll have to make lots of adjustments. That includes sizes, cardboard thicknesses, customization, and proportions. That last can be tricky, because so many of the measurements interlock with with each other, and Roth hasn't given any indication of what the dependencies are. Some of the more complex pieces also appear to assmble in non-obvious ways, which you'll have to work out for yourself.

Still, many of these patterns are well within the reach of a home crafter, and offer some exciting possibilities for gift boxes and other kinds of containers or stands. The patterns aren't the kind you can cut out directly from the book, but can be scanned and scaled, or just act as a conceptual inspiration.

Whether you're a commercial designer or a paper-crafting hobbyist, this is a unique and incredibly rich resource. Even if it doesn't solve your design problems directly, it shows hundreds of techniques that can be adapted to your own solutions.

Good material, bad presentation

The information is a great database for packaging design, but, it comes in a very thin paper. As you use, handle it, you'll feel as if your book is melting in your hands. And you'll miss a CD-ROM with the patterns, in a vetorial format. I have no idea why they didn't provide that.

About the Author
Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 - 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. She also wished to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years. Her 1872 work Middlemarch has been described by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language.

Must Read Melancholy Romance

Wow...

This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.

I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.

Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.

A Gothic parable about love

This short book, which amazon gives free to kindle owners, was composed by George Elliot (1819-1880). A shy rich man with a weak, sickly, poetical nature expects to die very soon from a heart condition in 1850. He doesn't expect any of his three servants to respond to his bell for help because he understand people and knows that they are involved in their own affairs. He uses these moments alone to tell his life story.

He realized that he had unique abilities when he was young. He had visions of the future, what people will do and say, long before they do or say it. He also had the gift of insight. He could understand people's character and pierce the veil of their faces and false conduct. Yet, he couldn't understand Bertha for many years.

Bertha was a thin and beautiful girl, a year older than he, with whom he fell in love. She could be charming. Yet, she was self-centered, negative, heartless, satirical, sarcastic, opinionated, vain, and loved power, but he saw none of this. He was nineteen and she twenty. She was engaged to his brother who was twenty-six. She admitted to him that she didn't love his brother. But he was in ecstasy with her and saw no faults. He even ignored a vision that he was married to her and she mistreated him. His brother died in an accident and he married Bertha without knowing if she loved him, although she said she did.

After some years of marriage, when his father died, he was suddenly able to see what his wife Bertha truly was, that she despised him. Then life became unbearable, as he foresaw in his vision.

He noticed a strange relationship between Bertha and her servant. Then, when the servant was dying, his friend, a doctor, told him that the servant would expire that night and asked for permission from him to insert blood into her artery after she died to see what happens. She died, the blood was inserted, she came back to life, turned to Bertha, who just entered the room, and yelled at her, "You mean to poison your husband...the poison is in the black cabinet...I got it for you." Then she died again, and he separated from Bertha after dividing his property with her, equally.

Reflecting back at the servant's resurrection, he asks, "Is this what it is to live again...to wake up with our unsatiated thirst upon us, with our unuttered curses rising to our lips, with our muscles ready to act out their half committed sins?"

Can this story be read as a parable, a commentary on marriage, that men are unable to unveil the character of their wives' feelings, even though they can understand other people, that love blinds?

This is a short story and is very different from anything else I've read of George Eliot's. It's a little bit of a horror story with no characters to truly like. The feeling of it reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

This is a great book that is somewhat overwhelming for the level of ...

This is a great book that is somewhat overwhelming for the level of carpentry that I am familiar with. It really does cover everything, and in great detail as well, from residential to commercial. I've been a contractor for 8 years and I would definitely recommend this book, it has helped a great deal in remembering certain formulas for various applications: from stringer, to rafters, foundations, and lumber load strengths. I can't keep all that knowledge in my head. I get questions about stuff in this book all the time from family members, they are usually the worst, now I can refer them to something. If someone wants to know the load capacity of their 10' staircase, this book will tell you.

Although it is exactly what I need, I assumed the study disc came with this order (being new and still in plastic). It didn't come with a CD, but I am not complaining since it's $30 cheaper than school offers it.

About the Author
Tomasino (Ph.D., University of Chicago) is ordained as a minister in the United Methodist church. He currently serves as Director of the Biblical Studies Program and associate professor of Bible, Old Testament and Hebrew studies at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana. A scholar of ancient Judaism, he is also the author of Written Upon the Heart: The Ten Commandments for Christians Today.

A good overview and a serviceable quick reference book

Anthony Thomasino's "Judaism Before Jesus" is a good overview of the historical events that occurred during the Intertestamental Period, but an overview is all that it is. A previous reviewer has already given an in-depth summary of the book (below), so I'll only add a couple of thoughts of my own to the discussions of this book found here.

The most interesting chapter in Thomasino's book is the one that deals with the Persian influence on Judaism from the time of the Babylonian exile onward. I was fascinated by some of the developments in Jewish theology that Thomasino attributes to the influence of Zoroastrianism. I was aware of the similarities between Judaism and Zoroastrianism, but I had not read anything previously about either religion influencing the other one to any great degree. I'm not sure that I'm entirely convinced by some of Thomasino's assertions, because I have not studied this topic much and because these assertions appear to be presented as his personal (though educated) observations, but I am certainly interested in pursuing further study of the ideas he has presented.

As for the rest of the book, it doesn't present anything new or give in-depth information about too many topics; as I said, it's simply a good overview. Frankly, if you have copies of the works of Josephus as well as 1 and 2 Maccabees, then you would do better to read those rather than Thomasino's book as he draws most of his material from these sources and presents it in summary form.

Thomasino does give suggestions for further reading at the end of every chapter, which I always appreciate (and I will most likely read some of the works he lists). This book will probably serve me well as a quick reference; however, with the exception of the chapter on the Persian influence, it's a bit long on well-known facts and short on ideas.

Just what I was looking for

I found Judaism Before Jesus to be exactly what I needed. Having just finished my fifth year in BSF in which we studied the history of Israel and the minor prophets and looking forward to studying Acts and the epistles, I wanted to know more about the history and culture from 525BC to the time of Jesus. JBJ provided the background. It is very enjoyable reading with many text boxes about subjects such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient writing, Greek military supremacy that were particularly interesting. I'd recommend this book for someone who is interested in gaining cultural context for studying the New Testament but doesn't want a seminary course on the subject or read through thirty footnotes per chapter.

I'm not a scholar

But I do want to know more about God and the Bible. It's hard to just read the Bible and understand it all. I'm not just talking about the theological and doctrinal ideas but about the people and events. I opened the New Testament and all of a sudden John is baptizing people! Where did that come from? I mostly have thought "Oh well God's thoughts are not my thoughts and He works in mysterious ways so it must be that". I was told all my life that between the Testaments were the silent years and if God chose to be silent you just left it alone. How could we have left out so much of the history that effects the New Testament and I don't think it's fair that only official scholars get this kind of information. God has worked all through history for our salvation, and it would've been helpful all these years to know all that instead of thinking I wasn't smart enough to know more about God. I started reading this book and suddenly Scripture changed for me! I knew these people! They were no longer just unpronounceable words but real people doing real things. Scripture makes much more sense to me now. It is so wonderful to have the missing pieces and see God's greater work in History.

Bad Quality, Short and... i say very bad quality already ?

Very poor quality of paper. Not color photos and very, very short. I mean... if i pay $4.95 for a 8.5x11 Magazine with all pics are in high resolution and colorful... why this book are so cheap ? For the knowledge ? Come on ! The papaer feel extremely recycling. With just a drop of water you can ruin the page. Another thing. This book is for Medium to Expert, not for normal to average users.

A must have

I used this book to work on my 1994 Honda so much that it is covered in grease and a bit of blood from a broken finger when changing a tie rod, but it was well worth the purchase. I no longer have my Accord, but I still have this book, as it was a great help, so I'll eventually give it to somebody who needs it.

What Haynes does really well is that they have a "questionnaire" that will help you to diagnose what is wrong with your car, and then the detailed, step-by-step instructions--that tell you what tools you will need, as Hondas have a few specialty tools that are required to work on them--make repairs easier. Torque values are included, and notes of caution are abundant so that attempted repairs do not cause you to do more harm than good, at least, not without ample warning. For the home mechanic, this is a must for this car.
