Not For People New to A+ or Computer Repair and Networking

Getting this review out to those who are looking now before the Deluxe Edition is released for Sale and is currently in Pre Order Status. If you have never done the A+ before and if you have not studied Computer Engineering Technology or Computer Science or have taken Instructor led certification training, please wait for the Deluxe Edition. I have used the Deluxe Editions for Previous versions of A+, very helpful.This book delivers extremely concentrated content written on a college level with advanced terminology starting right away in the first few pages of the first chapter; and going forward throughout the book. Here is an example: in PCIE discussion star topology is referenced, without explanation of what a star topology is in reference to discussing bus architecture. The name Sandy Bridge is used when discussing chip sets and processors, without explaining what this Intel Code Name represents. This is not a complaint, just two examples as to why this is not a good book for those new to the subject matter covered in A+. This book disseminates information in a very concentrated and sophisticated manner. I am literally studying every paragraph thoroughly and learning and seeing a lot of new information. I really do like this book. It is good for instructor led training, experienced technicians, and those who have already had some formal training on the subject. I am still reading this, but I had to get this review out to help those who are currently looking at the 900 series in January before the other books have been released for sale.

Highly Detailed but Convoluted

I am currently studying for 901 and 902. This book has lots of details but lacks organization. There is clearly a lack of tables. The author is a bit convoluted because he uses complicated sentences to describe topics. He does not provide clear and simple definitions for many terms. I have to use the internet to search for definitions. I have compared this book with Daril Gibson's book and the Microsoft Press book is much clearer in providing better diagrams and tables to summarize lots of facts. This book is up to date for the 901 and 902 but it could use better and clearer writing. I am currently creating an outline making up questions and answers from this book. I find it very slow and laborious to read the author's content. Sometimes, I can't find even a definition. If you do not know the material, you would find it a difficult and boring book to read. I consider this to be the best in terms of being the latest update and having the most information to prepare for test.d

Hardcoverwith gilt-edged pages (a nice touch!), this oversized book takes readers on an encyclopedic tour of Strange's origins, his allies, hisassociates, his enemies, and the notable turning points in his life.

"The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a hardcover book offering an overview of the most unique Marvel Comics superhero, Doctor Steven Strange, "Master of the Mystic Arts!" It is the first time such a volume has been produced for the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and covers the length and breadth of his extraordinary exploits: from his early days as a former doctor of medicine, his spiritual resurrection as the prized pupil of the wise wizard revered as the Ancient One, to his contemporary status as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protector of the natural and the supernatural on our precious planet.

This lesser book of the Vishanti is divided into 7 chapters:

"Strange Magic:"
This introductory section of the book serves as an abridged biography of Steven Strange, providing brief glimpses into his amazing adventures as he came to become Earth's Mystic Master.

"Side by Side:"
At 44 pages, this is the longest chapter in the 176 paged book. While Doctor Strange's special title of Sorcerer Supreme causes him to be involved in magical missions only he can master, they bring him into contact not just with individuals of the supernatural worlds but also encounters with Earth's ever growing, ever evolving superhero community. Over time, the wizard of other realities came to build lasting relationships with many remarkable men and women. This chapter details the friends and allies Doctor Strange has gained in his career. They include: The Ancient One, the mystic mentor to Doctor Strange. Wong, the "manservant, confidant, and housekeeper" to the master mage's unique home, the Sanctum Sanctorum. Clea, Doctor Strange's great love, the beautiful sorceress from the Dark Dimension. Spider-man, an unlikely but recurring comrade in arms to the "Master of the Mystic Arts" in many an adventure. Doctor Doom, the grim and megalomanical monarch of the European nation Latveria, has been an occasional ally to Doctor Strange, although he is one not to be fully trusted. The Sorcerer Supreme has also allied himself with other super heroes. For example, he is the founder and leader of the team called "The Defenders," whose original members included the incredible Hulk and Namor the Submariner. The team would later include such characters as the cosmic spacefarer, the Silver Surfer; the Valkyrie, warrior woman of Asgard; Wolverine, the adamantium-boned mutant; and the martial arts master known as Iron Fist. Doctor Strange is also a member of the mysterious team called the "The Illuminati," which consists of Steven Strange; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four; Prince Namor; Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men: T'Challa, the Black Panther, King of the African land of Wakanda; Black Bolt, leader of the Inhumans; and Tony Stark alias Iron Man, the organizer of this secret society, formed to secretly protect the Earth. In recent years, Doctor Strange has also become a member of "The New Avengers," a branch of the original super team, "The Avengers." Among its diverse rank of heroes are: Spider-man; Wolverine; Ben Grimm, one quarter member of the Fantastic Four; Luke Cage the Power Man; Jessica Jones, Luke Cage's wife and a super powered private investigator; and Carol Danvers, the cosmic powered heroine known as Captain Marvel.

"Enemy Mine:"
This chapter delves into the mystical villains Doctor Strange has battled in defense of Earth. Some of his major foes include: Nightmare, shadowy lord of the realm of dreams; Baron Karl Mordo, disgraced ex-apprentice of the Ancient One, and archenemy of Doctor Strange; and the Dread Dormammu, demonic nemesis from the Dark Dimension. The "Master of the Mystic Arts" has also battled such malevolent enemies as Mephisto, Marvel Comics' crimson incarnation of "the Devil;" Umar the Unrelenting, the sinister sister of Dormammu; and Dracula, the bloodthirsty lord of vampires.

"The All Powerful:"
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange has encountered entities that exist on levels beyond the mortal concepts of good and evil. This chapter describes these awe-inspiring figures. There is Eternity, a being that encompasses the entirety of space and time, envisioned as the universe itself in human form. The Vishanti, a trinity of cosmic beings whose history form the foundation of the title and responsibility, Sorcerer Supreme. The Living Tribunal, the golden, three headed embodiment and guardian of cosmic balance in the myriad realms of the multiverse. These and other sentient cosmic forces have the power to affect the concept humanity calls reality on an inter-galactic and inter-dimensional scale, and part of Doctor Strange's immense task as Sorcerer Supreme is to represent and protect the humble world of Earth from entities whose vision transcends the boundaries of our universe.

"Mystic Realms:"
Doctor Strange's adventures have taken him far beyond the deep blue seas and vast continents of the Earth. His excursions have had the seer of the supernatural enter worlds that are not worlds and dimensions where dreams are made real. This chapter attempts to describe the almost indescribable, the planes of existence that the Sorcerer Supreme regularly explores as guardian of our cherished planetary home. Starting from his Sanctum Sanctorum, a New York victorian brownstone which is more than just a spacious home to the master of magic, Doctor Strange can enter such other dimensional realities as the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, a domain without form or structure; the ethereal realm of Eternity, which is just an aspect of the entity's totality; or the unworld of Ditkopolis, a dimension that pays artistic tribute to the co-creator of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko.

"Spellbound:"
This section of the book describes Doctor Strange's relationship with the power of magic, his bond with the mystical forces of the Earth and beyond, and his spiritual link to such magical entities as the Vishanti, as well as Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Raggador, and Watoomb. These cosmic connections form the basis of some of the spells the "Master of the Mystic Arts" invokes, like "the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak," the Roving Rings of Raggador," and the "Winds of Watoomb."

"Objects of Enchantment:"

As written by Billy Wrecks, Nick Jones, and Danny Graydon, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exploration of the "strange tales" of the great comic character that is Doctor Strange. It reveals many concepts and background facts that even this long time fan of the character did not know, like: Baron Mordo's middle name is 'Amadeus!' Or the distinctive round window designed atop Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum is called "The Window of Worlds," and "is decorated with a pattern of the Anomaly Rue, the Seal of the Vishanti." This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.

The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.

Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.

Wide variety of information. Good Book!

Usually get most things at Amazon, but got this at a local Comic Book Store. I really liked it. Has enough information to get you caught up before the movie and covers a lot of details I had no idea about and will keep you from having to read 200 comics to find out!

Based on the author's boarding school experiences at Radley College in the late 1870s, Jaspar Tristram (1899) is an extraordinary psychological study of the eponymous hero, tracing his thoughts and emotions as he proceeds from boyhood towards young adulthood: his unhappiness at school, his affection for the older boy Orr and later his love for his friend L. C. 'Elsie' Southwood. As A. D. Harvey writes in the Introduction, it is 'one of the most painfully convincing portrayals of adolescence ever written'. Though presented in the safer guise of a story of 'schoolboy friendships', it is also one of the earliest gay-themed English novels ever published.

Praised by late-Victorian critics, Jaspar Tristram quickly became a cult favourite in gay literary circles, counting Oscar Wilde (who called it 'charming'), Edward Carpenter, and Marc-Andr� Raffalovich among its admirers, and it is also a likely influence on E. M. Forster's Maurice and Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. This first-ever republication of the only novel by A. W. Clarke (1860-1913) reprints the unabridged text of the scarce first edition and includes a new introduction.

Nineteenth-century English public school homoerotic love

Admired by Oscar Wilde and Edward Carpenter when it was published in 1899, Jaspar Tristram, was the only novel by Edward Ashley Walrond Clarke. The reflections of the eponymous adolescent public schoolboy are the story of the novel, which shows more than a touch of Henry James in how every motive and feeling is analysed. The voice of the self-reflexive narcissistic Jaspar feels, like Dorian Gray, still very contemporary.

Arguably, the novel is one of the earliest to tackle the themes of both teenage loneliness and unrequited homoerotic attraction in the English public school system. Jaspar’s emotional angst over his school friend Lancelot Clarke (L.C. or ‘Elsie’ as he affectionately nicknames him) is realistically depicted: ‘Suddenly, as, leaning back against the jamb, he was opening his hand to the blaze, he felt it touched, and, looking round, met Elsie’s eyes, and in that instant it seemed to him, not so much that they were reconciled, as that their friendship somehow passed into a different stage’ (p.74). The queer moments of looks and silences between close friends and rivals is captured effectively, and may be based on Clarke’s real experiences at Radley College in the late 1870s.

Undoubtedly, the novel is striking for its uncompromising honesty about the physical and emotional abuse suffered by boys at public schools in late nineteenth-century England (and indeed today) particularly if they were perceived to be ‘queer’. Aloof and independent, Jaspar is mercilessly bullied by the cruel and sadistic Orr, an older boy whom he first encounters at his prep school. Clarke’s insight into the sometimes complex psycho-sexual dimensions of homoerotic attraction is remarkable: ‘He would gladly have suffered a hundred times more to have gained the approval of one who was so tall and strong and had such stern imperious ways’ (p.14). Harvey sets the novel in the context of John Addington Symonds’ recollections of the homosocial dimensions to public school life at Harrow.

Although as Harvey notes, the critical reception was mixed, and the second half of the novel is indeed perhaps ‘dull’, in that Jaspar later turns straight, falling in love with Elsie’s twin sister, Clarke’s novel is worth revisiting. Foreshadowing the themes of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited (1945) and with touches of William Golding’s, The Lord of the Flies (1954) Jaspar Tristram is also ‘a love novel, and a very unusual one.’

Q&A with Author Martin Rossman, M.D. Is worry always bad for you? No, that’s the point of The Worry Solution. “Good” worry can help you solve problems and avoid danger. It’s just when you let it become a bad habit that it becomes a problem. Do women worry more than men? If so, why? All studies show that women worry more than men. Why? Probably because they have more to worry about—including men! Biologically speaking, with women generally being smaller, slower, and physically weaker than men, it makes sense for them to be more vigilant and careful, especially to signs of violence and aggression. Brain studies show that the areas in the brain that process fear and vigilance are considerably larger in women, and I have to assume that was in the survival interest for them and their young. Now, with so much frightening information coming to us through the media, everyone, women especially, need to upgrade their mental software so as to be able to focus on using worry well. How can we develop a good worry habit if we are living with very real worries—like facing eviction or not having health care, or having family in a war-torn country? Unfortunately, The Worry Solution cannot remove real tragedy and hardship from life. But it can eliminate a great deal of tragedy and hardship that never actually happens. The essence of The Worry Solution is separating things into those you can do something about from those you can’t, and learning how to deal better with both. It doesn’t mean life is easy, but it can help us avoid making life harder than it needs to be. Can you explain why guided imagery is so effective in reducing worry and anxiety? How do people know when they need medication for their worry and when they can use guided imagery alone? There are traumatic times when fear goes beyond worry and it can take over our minds—creating panic and high levels of anxiety. When the brain is aroused that way, it may take medications to get the anxiety level down to where people can regain control of their faculties. But when the worry is chronic and habitual, it is wise to learn the skills taught in The Worry Solution and see what they can do for you. Many people find that gets them back in control of themselves and they don’t need medications.

How Each of Us Can Find Our Own Worry Solution

This book is easy to read, understand, and use. I am working on the practices to worry less, take positive action, and live a more creative life. If you will give it a real chance and not take its simplicity for granted, I'm confident you will get a lot out of this book.

Suggestion: Fix Small Font and Dark Text Background to improve readability.
I really hope a next edition of this very valuable book will be reformatted to upsize the small font size of the main text, and to really upsize the very, very small text font size in the guided imagery exercise boxes. It would also help greatly to remove the shaded, dark background of these boxes. More contrast of a lighter page background to contrast with the black font would make it so much easier to read these important sections.

The book does have some helpful hints but it is repetitive. Did not appreciate that after paying for the book you would need yo separately buy the audio tape for the guided exercises- why not just allow free download of them if you already purchased the book?

Ready to get to the next level?

The description of the book is pretty good, so let me tell you what I think of the book instead of what it covers. Let me start with an analogy. Let's say you are learning to be a carpenter. You just found out how to use a hammer, screw driver, tape measure, and a few saws. Think you can build a strong house to code and regulations now? No, not even close. Just because you know how to use tools, doesn't mean you know WHEN to use them. Should I use screws, or nails for that? How many nails? what size? This part is what separates someone with knowledge of programming from a great programmer. Maybe you took some classes, or even got a degree. Great, now you have a tool bag full of programming tools and you mostly know what they do. This book will teach you the patterns and habits to follow to best use those tools the right way. If all you want are the 1, 2, 3 steps to follow, you can get that quickly. If you want to know why these are the best steps, the book offers that up as well.

The book suggests you should have at least have a firm grasp on basic programming skills to get the most out of it. I do agree that a good part of the book would be beyond someone who doesn't know what a variable is, but I think this book should be on every programmers bookshelf regardless of his or her skill level. For a beginner programmer this book lays a good foundation on programming habits and ways of thinking that will really help you become a skilled professional. The book really shines for someone who took some classes and has worked as a developer for a year or two. At this point you have the syntax down on at least one or two languages and are realizing that was just the first step. Even advanced programmers will pick up several good idea's.

While the book is full of great information, I think my favorite part are the last two chapters that follow a fictitious developer group working on projects. They go step by step through the processes. The book gives considerable attention and space to dialogs from the team discussing the projects between themselves. While the wording sounds a bit scripted at times, it does a really good job of highlighting how a development group interacts, and what kind of issues and concerns often come up. I think that part really helps achieve the books goal of bridging theory into real world application. The skills and knowledge you get from this book are central to those seemingly nebulous soft skills that win people jobs and promotions. If I have ever seen experience in a bottle, this is it.

Great Book On Modern Software Design

TL;DR - This book is a great read for all levels of software engineers. It is a good reminder and description of well accept software design principles. It provides practical examples of how these principles can be applied to real-world software products. Personally, I wrote notes of a number of items to integrate into my team’s process. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a good grasp on the C# language.

I am a development manager with 15 years of experience and in charge of a large system that is in need of a good refactoring. I was interested in this book to help update the teams design guidelines. I was impressed with the content of this book. This is the first programming book that has impressed me in the last few years.

This book has two main focuses the SCRUM process and the SOLID principles. It is divided into three parts: An Agile Foundation, Writing Solid Code, and a sample application.

The first part, An Agile Foundation, focuses on the SCRUM process. In my experience, I have never worked in an organization that would fully support a SCRUM development process. However, only one chapter in this part of the book is fully dedicated to the description of the SCRUM process. The remaining chapters bring up many topics such as technical debt, refactoring, unit testing, design patterns. All of the topics discussed should be part of any technical teams design process.

The second part, Writing SOLID Code, focus on the SOLID design:
Single Responsibility Principle
Open/Close Principle
Liskov Substitution Principle
Interface Segregation
Dependency Injection

The SOLID principles have been the focus of numerous blog posts and podcasts over the past year. All of these avenues have provided a great summary of the principles. However, I have not found any site that provide details of each principle and provides examples. In addition, the author also gives examples where using one or a combination of these principles are overkill. I think this is missing in most of the descriptions I have previously seen.

The last section of the book was a dedicated example combining the SCRUM process with the SOLID design principles. I thought this was a really useful section for all levels of development. For an more experience developer it gave examples of how to integrate these principles in their current design process. For the inexperience developer this gave a great example of the complete process.

I would suggest that the author consider examples with more traditional process (not quite waterfall, not quite agile). This way it would quickly be applicable to the vast majority of developers.

This book is a game-changer for the C# community. Scrum, patterns, the SOLID principles and clean code all have their roots more or less in the Java language. Development on the Microsoft stack was dominated a long time by an extremely pragmatic and tool-centric style. Fortunately, in the last years more and more enterprise developers are starting to build large systems on the .NET Framework, not few of them being former Java developers, creating the need for more flexible architectures and a source code structure which does not start rotting on day one.

CHAPTER 3 Interfaces and design patterns
CHAPTER 4 Unit testing and refactoring

PART II WRITING SOLID CODE

PART III ADAPTIVE SAMPLE

Part 1 defines the building blocks of professional software development. After a short introduction into scrum, the main problem of maintainable software is discussed from different viewing angles: dependencies. The ubiquitous tool to manage dependencies is the topic of the next chapter: No pattern without an interface. Unit tests and refactorings are the last chapter of this part and it emphasizes the important fact that unit tests are the prerequisite for refactoring and code that is not permanently adopted starts rotting. I like the writing style of the author, as he does not talk too much about theory. Instead he makes examples and show the consequences of the different approaches. You can easily follow his arguments and its fun reading.

Part 2 iterates through the SOLID principles using many good code examples. He starts with the typical coding style of the intermediate programmer, which unfortunately reminded me of some code I wrote myself, gradually refactoring it towards clean code. This process is accompanied by exhaustive reflection of the resulting quality and also shows the limits of perfection. I like most that he takes into account, that good code is not definable theoretically, but depends on the team, the experience, the customer and the whole situation.

Part 3 lets the reader be a fly on the wall of a scrum team. It shows how the team deals with changing requirements and how the SOLID principles helps them succeeding. This part leaves no doubt that the main target of this book is learning by reading and reviewing code. The many examples are all downloadable from GitHub.

The author Gary McLean Hall crafted a book, which is more than the sum of its parts. It's a concise and at the same time very practical summary of the main agile topics of the last decade rewritten from a C# perspective. It's full of code examples which help programmers to grasp the ideas behind the principles and patterns. The biggest difference to other development books in this area is, that it is not dogmatic. The author leaves no doubt, that the shown coding techniques are very powerful, but he also concedes that sometimes a simple class violating SRP is appropriate.

Garry McLean Hall coined the term "adaptive code" and I am sure that this was not the last thing we heard of him.

By breaking up the visual language into two main components–“elements” make up its vocabulary, and “decisions” are its grammar–David duChemin transforms what has traditionally been esoteric and difficult subject matter into an accessible and practical discussion that photographers can immediately use to improve their craft. Elements are the “words” of the image, what we place within the frame–lines, curves, light, color, contrast. Decisions are the choices we make in assembling those elements to best express and communicate our vision–the use of framing, perspective, point of view, balance, focus, exposure.

All content within the frame has meaning, and duChemin establishes that photographers must consciously and deliberately choose the elements that go within their frame and make the decisions about how that frame is constructed and presented. In the second half of the book, duChemin applies this methodology to his own craft, as he explores the visual language in 20 of his own images, discussing how the intentional choices of elements and decisions that went into their creation contribute to their success.

This is the fourth book of David's that I have purchased (not counting his ebooks over at craft and vision), and it is probably my favorite. I have been teaching an intro to photography course using his within the frame book, but next time I teach this class, I'll be using this book instead. It does a great job of focusing on a something that matters more than f/stops and shutter speeds---the vision of the artist and the grammar to talk about it with others.

On of my biggest frustrations as a photographer when talking to others about their work is how little they are able to discuss why they like certain photographs and what it is about those photos that make them unique to their vision. With so many people creating and showing great images, it is not enough to just be a good photographer. You have to be a creative photographer whose work stands out as different from others. I have found that to understand how your work is different and what your sense of aesthetics are requires a vocabulary/grammar to discuss the work so that you can continue to push those elements in your work that are unique to your vision.

David does a good job in this book by helping the visual artist begin this process. The book starts with some background on how David came to this book and what to expect. He spends some time discussing vision and intention in photography; and how vision is often times lost in conversations of gear, technique and tangible skills. In these early pages, much of the conversation is about the nature and intention required in the building of a "good photograph"

The second part of the book looks at two critical components of a photograph. The first is the elements within the image and their impact on the viewer. Elements such as lines, color, repetition and light are discussed in-depth as a language to discuss images rather than as a set of rules that need to be followed to create a good image. The second component is the decisions that are made when the camera is pointed at the subject and the shutter clicks. From lens choice, focus points, to framing and exposure; all these critical decisions are often made very quickly with little thought while shooting. David provides a chance to look at the impact of these decisions, and how we can use our awareness of these components to make more interesting photos.

The third part of the book is a collection of David's images where he spends a lot of time looking at the application of the conversations in the earlier chapters of the book. We get to look at not only a variety of photographs and subjects, but also exactly how David uses these concepts in the creation and post-production of his own images. I found David's openness and honesty refreshing. He is willing to talk about what worked and didn't work for him and things he might change in the future. Having 20 examples of David's work builds a great foundation to start with before taking on your own work.

As I said, I am a fan of David's work; and I think he has an amazing gift to write so that you feel as if you are talking over a cup of coffee. He finds a way to make the conversation seem to be both educational and conversational at the same time. I have found him to be great mentor over the years and look forward to continuing to use his guidance to improve my own art for many more years.

Photographically happy!

David DuChemin doesn't write about photography so much as he does the philosophy, the soul, the love, and the power of photography. His commitment isn't to the mechanics of the craft so much as it is to the link between photography and its impact on the world. All of David's books are inspiring and powerful, but this one goes to another level. Reading the book is like having a conversation with the author, a conversation that leads the reader to a new level of thinking about what it means to be a photographer. As someone who travels to 70 countries every year, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Run, don't walk, to buy it. You will NOT be disappointed.

Message, Elements and Decisions

Anyone who has read David duChemin's other books will know why I regard him as a thoughtful photographer. In this book he returns to the starting place, discussing composition.

The beginning of the book talks about photography as a means of communication of the photographer's vision, and defines a few concepts that the author uses throughout the remainder of the book, particularly "Message, Elements and Decisions". The selection of an Element or Decision should enhance the Message. Next he discusses what he calls Elements, like line, light and moment. For Decisions he considers topics like framing, placement and exposure. Finally he presents twenty of his own photographs, explaining how the Elements and Decisions explicate the Message.

Early in the book the author discusses photographers who say they don't need to understand what he means by Message, Elements and Decisions because they say they shoot intuitively. DuChemin charitably suggests that the best of these have probably internalized those elements. The remainder are probably just lazy photographers who would probably most benefit from duChemin's analysis but are those most unlikely to try to understand it. (This harsh conclusion is mine, not duChemin's.)

This is an excellent book and the author's analysis of his photographs will prove useful to readers in trying to internalize the concepts of Message, Elements and Decisions. Sometimes I disagreed with the author's conclusion that a particular technique had enhanced the meaning of an image, but even in those cases, I believed the examination of the technique would ultimately improve my own photography.

The concepts presented are not new and have been presented in many other photography books. In fact as I read, I wondered why he had not stuck to the traditional terms of description and analysis of the arts, like form and content, or technique and product. Although the author does not explain the advantage of a new taxonomy, he obviously feels that it will help the reader to get a better grasp on the underlying concepts. I'm not certain that it does, but on the other hand, it certainly is no worse than the more traditional form. In any event, my own belief is that multiple approaches to concepts help us to get a better grasp, and reading duChemin can only help, even if you are an experienced photographer.

It seems to me that the author's earlier works, like "Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision" served to develop concepts that had not been emphasized enough to photographers. This book covers ground that studious photographers will be familiar with, but the path may be more attractive.
