This is a one of a kind book that tactfully describes the interdependence of the mind, spirit and body. It is fascinating to read a perspective that intertwines the intellectual abilities with the spiritual side of perseverance; even though the content drives home the neurology of the brain it is presented here without any complexity. Special attention is also given to the dynamism of emotions and the power of the thought process.

This book is great! I like to emphasize on the applications that are organized in a way to fit my life. There are a lot of helpful tips that I found and wanted to contact the author for direct advice which was surprisingly easy, I just googled him. The book is an easy read and is about 100 pages long but it is filled with gems.

good but not great

I am med-peds trained, practicing hospital and emergency medicine for both adults and kids. I have also practiced primary care. This book has pros and cons:

Pros:

Compact

Ringed binder allows you to leave out pages you don't need or add others to it (if you see adults and kids, you can put MGH's Pocket Medicine book along with these pages in one binder).

Contains some very good info in table and outline format

Cons:

Index is not very helpful (lists every page that mentions a topic even in passing, without letting the reader know which pages are devoted to the topic).

Missing important info (two examples: next to nothing for AAP neonatal jaundice guidelines, just refers you to the seminal Bhutani paper; a similar lack of info on indications for antibiotics in neonates...these are common, important clinical situations)

The best pocket-sized resource

Much like the pocket medicine book we all love, this book contains all of the high-yield, easily-readable information you need to know to take care of your patients as a House Officer. While I have piles of medical books collecting dust, this is one of the four books I ACTUALLY use and one of the two books I keep in my pocket. It's weak in neonatology, but it makes up for it in PICU material. If it only had a few pages dedicated to medication dosing, I'd be leaving my Harriet at home. If I had to pick one book to carry with me, this would be it.

Exactly like pocket medicine for pediatrics. I survived med school rotations with pocket medicine and am now doing the same as a peds resident with this new version. Great review and references on every topic. The most comprehensive and condensed book you can carry around. I would take it over my harriet lane any day.

Terrific book for young readers!

I bought NGR Planes for my 5 year old and he absolutely adores it. I was wary after reading the other review and discovered that the other reviewer should have double checked his facts before he called them false. They are 100% true. Also, the interesting tidbits about things like the how much food is on board an aircraft carrier is exactly what makes the book stand out from the rest of the yawn-worthy titles on the market. Finally, the narrator for this book is perfect. She appears friendly and knowledgeable, and as an early educational specialist I know that's exactly what young readers gravitate towards.

The book is educational and interesting, but has a fun edge that kids will love. Well worth the buy. Yet another terrific product from Nat Geo kids.

Powerful message.

In this lovely picture book for older children, Papa Panov is an elderly shoemaker, feeling lonely on Christmas Eve. He reads about the birth of Jesus, long ago, and how Mary and Joseph had been turned away at the inn. If they had come here, he thinks to himself, I would have taken them in and cared for them. After drifting off to sleep, Papa Panov has a dream in which Jesus says he will come and visit the old shoemaker the next day. Eagerly, Papa Panov watches the streets on Christmas day, looking for Jesus. Along comes the humble street sweeper, and then a homeless woman and her child, and others who are down on their luck and in need. Papa Panov, though he wants to be watching for Jesus, kindly reaches out to each one who comes his way, offering a bit of food and comfort. When the day ends and Jesus apparently has not come, Papa Panov is disappointed -- until in another dream Jesus says that he had come after all! "I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me water, I was cold and you took me in. All the time you were helping them, you were helping me!"

Disappointing recent edition

We have read Papa Panov's Special Day each Christmas time for 30 years. We have the 1978 edition with illustrations by Nathalie Vilain. When I saw that a more recent edition was available I ordered it hoping that perhaps I could then order additional copies to give to my grown children for their families. What a disappointment -- the older edition had simple, somewhat gritty illustrations of a thin, simple shoemaker; this one has happy, bright watercolors that don't fit the story at all. Papa Panov has become a Santa-clone -- chubby with white hair and beard. Furthermore, there is a gratuitous cat in the illustrations for reasons unknown. Although the same person is credited with the retelling, they have even changed the text: Papa Panov no longer has a grey mustache but a white one; unnecessarily the new text adds 'I'll remember that whenever I read the Christmas story,' which rings false in Papa Panov's voice. All in all, the publisher, Lion Hudson, would have done much, much better re-releasing the old version.

This is a wonderful Christmas story and will touch the hearts of both children and adults. It depicts the real true meaning of Christmas and how we meet Jesus in every person we reach out to in kindness and unselfishness. It is not long and can be read out loud in less than 10 minutes and is perfect for that story before bed.

Vikas Kumar Jha is a Hindi journalist based in Patna. His first novel was titled Bhog, and his collection of Hindi poems, Is Baarish Mein. He has written two critically acclaimed plays in Maithili, namely Jamputra and Sonmachhariya, and a nonfiction narrative on the criminalization of politics in Bihar. McKluskieganj received the Indu Sharma Katha Samman in 2011 and was quoted as being an extraordinary novel in many Hindi newspapers.

It is a dear little book but my personal interest in it was because for 15 years we lived in the same area (but the other side of Ranchi) so I could identify with many places mentioned in the book. And I wished so much that we had gone to McCluskiganj - but we never did! The first time I heard of it was when I was in Woodlands Hospital in Calcutta when my nurse told me about it and the many beautiful bungalows there. The book brings out the immense love the original "settlers" had for their township but the language is odd and quaint sometimes.
