Obligations, priorities, goals and dreams. Where does it all fit?

Frazzled. Burnt-out.
Distracted.
Stretched thin. Weary.

None of those are pretty images, but they're sure vivid.
And who hasn't experienced a period of time when those words are your reality?

Sometimes stress comes with a season- new job, no job, holidays, college, illness- and it will pass in time.
But sometimes, your life will need restructuring to reclaim "shalom" as much as possible.

Kerri Weems begins this book by discussing that- "shalom."
This old Hebrew word fascinates me, because it hints at wholeness and healing through all of our lives.
It suggests everything being as it should be, moving to a rhythm of grace.

St. Paul compared life to a long distance run, where ground is gained by one-foot-in-front-of-the-other persistence. Each person needs a pace they can sustain without sacrificing their sanity or soul.
This book is a straight-talking, compassionate guide to setting your pace in all areas: relationships, family and home, work, your schedule, your health, and your spiritual vitality.

Kerri suggests we establish a cycle of rebooting, taking time to reflect on what's working for us and what's not. Then she encourages us to dream a little, imagining a future of priorities and purpose.
She reminds us that "We cannot conquer time, we can only sanctify and redeem it."

Especially now, with the holiday season coming, I think there will be many people wondering how they're going to "run the race" in 2015. They're tired, worn out, and burdened. They know they can't stop moving, so many people depend on them!
Perhaps this book would become a gentle guide for them. It would say "I know you can't stop running, but let's take a look at your pace. Let's reboot yours days, weeks, and months so that next year is less draining." If you need a last minute gift, you could certainly look at Rhythms of Grace.

Beautiful Book for Discovering Margin and Peace in Your Schedule

Rhythms of Grace: Discovering God’s Tempo for Your Life by Kerri Weems is a book that is written for women who feel a little overwhelmed. Is your schedule driving you? Do you feel like you’re constantly busy but accomplishing nothing? Do you feel need for a little more margin and rest in your life? Do you want to be able to connect your schedule to God’s mission for you in life?

If you could answer yes to any of these questions, Weems has a word for you. Rhythms of Grace is about putting the important things first in your weekly rhythm, and making those the things that are important parts of your day. She begins with the idea of finding shalom in your lifestyle, and about how our culture that is driven by work and productivity will never allow us to naturally make space for peace and rest in our lives.

She explores the sabbath and rest. She discusses whether or not your doing the right things for the right reasons or for the wrong reasons because the right things, if done for the wrong reasons, are still the wrong things. After this discussion, she comes to the heart of her book with the idea that there are “pacesetters” and “peacestealers,” These “pacesetters” are the good things and situations that set the pace of our lives. However, many of them, if not given their proper place in our lives can become “peacestealers” and take the peace in our lives away. The four areas of life where Weems marks these pacesetters and peacestealers is through work, relationships, our bodies and our spiritual vitality.

Once you’ve determined these entities (and the questions at the end of each chapter will help you to do so), you are ready to reboot your schedule. This means you take these pacesetters, your commitments, etc. and you begin to set up your weekly rhythm and daily schedule for your life.

I found this book to be a beautiful reminder that time management is about more than just filling in the boxes on your calendar. Instead, this book is about how your schedule should be birthed out of the things and people who are most important to you, and that you should always leave time to rest and recharge. I hope to find that as I continue to reset my schedule that the lessons learned here will help my days to be a little less frantic.

About the Author
Thomas L. Rost is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis and is currently the Executive Associate Dean there in the Division of Biological Sciences. He received his B.S. in biology from St. John's University, his M.A. in biology from Mankato State University, and his Ph.D. in botany from Iowa State University. He has taught developmental plant anatomy for almost 30 years. His primary research interests include the structure and development of roots in vascular plants and structural aspects of Pierce's disease in grape vines.

Michael Barbour is a plant ecologist in the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of California, Davis. His research blends ecophysiology, population biology, and vegetation science. His current research projects include a state-wide survey of vernal pool vegetation in California for conservation purposes, a search for vegetation and soil traits that define "old-growth" status for montane mixed conifer forest and a continuum of values for those traits that correlate with successional distance from old-growth status, and a reconstruction of pre-contact old-growth Californian mixed conifer forest. These projects have been supported by the USDA Forest Service, the National Science Foundation, the Packard Foundation, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the California Department of Transportation.

Ralph Stocking received his degrees in plant nutrition and plant physiology from University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis. His research background concerns water relations of plants, photosynthesis, and chloroplast structure and development, on which subjects he has published over 80 scientific papers. He has also been a coauthor of nine editions of the UC Davis series of botany/plant biology books.

Terence Murphy is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in cell biology, and has taught courses in introductory biology, plant physiology, and plant molecular biology. His research areas include the effects of stress on plant cells, particularly on DNA, membrane transport, and oxygen metabolism. Terence Murphy has over 30 years of experience teaching introductory biology courses.

Simple read, informative

This book is written in a very clear style so that students of all ages can understand it. I used this book for a college level plant biology class, but I could see people using it as early as middle school for an introduction to botany. It may not be worth the price if you're just buying the book for leisure reading, but remember that you're paying for a textbook.

Its literally biology growing in a book

Everything is in the book, the price is right, but the book was not well taken care of. It looks like someone spilled (red Kool-aid) on the book, and some mold started to grow in the back pages. Funny, a "plant biology" book with mold growing in the pages, how literal is that, I bet the book companies never thought of doing that for a new type of learning experience.

This book was exactly as I expected, slight use but in perfect condition. The price was very affordable as the bookstore at my college wanted $350.00 for it, I got it way cheaper through here.

Spanish or English - Great Audio CD

As a fan of Dave Ramsey and his teachings on personal finance, I purchased the Spanish edition of the Total Money Makeover to give as a gift to a young Cuban immigrant that does the housekeeping and janitorial work in our offices. After listening about his struggles in the few years he has been in the US, I have basically come to learn that language is the first barrier followed by money problems. Low income = debt and predatory lending traps and it doesn't help that he doesn't always understand what is being sold to him. I am grateful for a translated version, which I have listened to and affirm is a great translation, which I hope will serve the Spanish listening audience well.

Yo lei la version en Ingles, y nos encancto el plan de Dave Ramsey. Es solo sentido comun, pero es necesario leerlo pues, el es directo en lo que dice y te abre los ojos en cuanto a nuestros errores financieros. Es simple de seguir, pero toma decision hacer las cosas que el dice, eso al final queda en manos de el que lee el libro. Dave Ramsey es muy buen maestro, escribe de manera simple y divertida, pero me gusta que tambien ensena valores y siempre reconoce a Dios en todo. Al que no cree en Dios o no le gusta que le hablen de Dios quizas le irrite leer este libro, pero si aun asi se lee con tolerancia se pueden sacar lecciones muy importantes y facilmente aplicable a las vidas de cualquier mortal como uno. Lo compre en espanol para regalarselos a mis familiares en mi pais. Mi unico problema es que en algunas partes la traduccion es un poco mala, pero se entiende la idea. No mas yo soy un poco sensible con la materia de traduccion. Lo recomiendo a todos los los que de corazon quiren saldar sus deudas. Este libro es excelente!

I'm really loving all I'm reading in this book. Dave Ramsey shows you how you should use the money in your favor to win not to lose. Got this one in Spanish for myself and the English version for my husband and we are both on our way to transform our money management and our life. The only regret I have is not starting earlier on this journey. I truly recommend it specially if you are young so you don't make the mistakes we have in the past. Great book!

A very big repertoire book

Grandmaster Boris Avrukh, a noted Grunfeld expert, has delivered 600 pages across two volumes - the most ambitious project on this fascinating opening. Perhaps the expectation would be that this would be the "the truth" against which we could refer for many years into the future. However, as Graham Greene said "the truth has never been of any real value to any human being...", and Avrukh has delivered a pragmatic repertoire book - albeit a large one. In contrast, in 2004 Sakaev in How to Get the Edge Against the Gruenfeld did attempt to find the truth on the Grunfeld Exchange with 7 Bc4. His findings have bedevilled authors since, including as I will discuss, Avrukh.

How is the repertoire presented? Avrukh follows the tree format, and much of the analysis is clearly his own (I am in awe of the amount of work he has done). He is comprehensive - many seemingly rare and minor lines receive detailed coverage. For example, the variation 1.d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5 4 Bg5 Ne4 5 Nxe4, a line that has often annoyed me and which most other authors give little attention to, receives 7 pages!

While Avrukh is comprehensive in explaining the MOVES, there is much less discussion of the IDEAS, and also why he chose the lines for the repertoire that he did. I thought this was a strength of Yelena Dembo in Play the Grunfeld: Detailed coverage of this Kasparov favourite. She explained her choice of repertoire, and if she sometimes chose a second best line, she explained why. She also tried to explain the objectives and ideas of her repertoire. The latter was an even greater strength of Safest Grunfeld by Delchev and Agrest (D/A). This gives an indication of the target market for these books.

To the repertoire:
Modern Exchange with 8 Rb1: Avrukh goes into the complicated main line with 9...cxd4, exactly as I would expect. (Dembo chose the quite respectable 9...b6. D/A chose 9...Nc6 with Chiburdanidze's quirky 13...Bc7, with 9...b6 as the back up).
Modern Exchange with Be3: Avrukh goes into the Grunfeld endgames avoiding Nxd2, again expected. (Dembo went for the endgames allowing Nxd2, arguably one of her second best options, while D/A avoided the endgames. With line conclusions like "Black has no chances to win this position..." this was a worrying area of their repertoire. If you are going to play the Grunfeld, you MUST know the Grunfeld endgame.)
Classical Exchange with 7 Bc4: here Avrukh recommends two sidelines, showing Sakaev's enduring influence. The first is Koutley's 10...Bg4 11 f3 Bd7. The argument is that in comparison with Svidler's straightforward 10...Bd7, the Be3 can be loose. I never see it in any of the main lines. But my bigger question is that in some lines White gains a tempo by having played f3. Avrukh's second choice is 10...Qc7 11 Rc1 b6!? This was recognized by Hartson as "an important alternative" back in 1971 (!)in The Gr�nfeld Defence [Grunfeld Defense]. The problem is that Avrukh omits to address Sakeav's (admittedly small) recommendation for White. (Dembo goes for Simagin's 10...Na5, with Svidler's 10...Bd7 as the back up. D/A make a case for Shamkovich's 10...Qc7, with 10...Na5 as the back up.)
Russian System: Avrukh chooses the Semi-Smyslov with 7...Nc6 - in a "Grandmaster Guide" I would have expected him to present the more complicated Prinz or Hungarian, which are overdue a review. (Dembo and D/A also present the Semi-Smyslov as would be expected for their target market).
Bf4: standard, although I need to have a deeper look here (Dembo had her other second best option here).
5 Bg5: after 8 Qd2 Avrukh recommends 8...h6 immediately. I had thought this vulnerable to 9 Nh3-f4 so need to have a deeper look. (Dembo follows the mainline with 8...exd5, while D/H choose the very unusual 7...0-0!? potentially sacrificing a pawn.)
Fianchetto: Avrukh opts for the pragmatic c6 lines. I had always thought these a bit stodgy for Black - Karpov especially showed the pressure white can bring to bear. Avrukh presents some subtle move order changes to avoid the most passive positions. (Both Dembo and D/A opt for the more combative open variations).

To sum up: this book is aimed at a relatively high elo audience (2200 plus ?) where concrete moves are more important than ideas (the reader will already well understand middlegame concepts). That said, the book doesn't seek "the truth", and sometimes avoids the absolute mainlines for pragmatic alternatives. I really wonder how widely used - and therefore relevant - the Classical Exchange repertoire choices will be. Because of its sheer comprehensiveness this book is a MUST HAVE for any serious Grunfeld player, but surprisingly, any serious Grunfeld player may not adopt the entire repertoire. For lower Elo players Dembo's work is holding up surprisingly well. D/A is the best discussion of ideas but their repertoire choices are often unclear, and the reader can be left "hanging" at the end of lines.

Four stars might appear harsh, but this is not really a ground breaking work, rather just a very big and detailed repertoire book.

Fantastic Opening Book

This is an extremely thorough and well written work. I am USCF 2000+ and have been playing the Grunfeld for 20 years, and I consider this book a great addition to my chess library. This, along with the other volume, acts as an excellent reference for correspondence chess.

The depth and volume make it impossible to be a page turner, at least for me; however, it makes a great reference.

Another success

As others have observed, Avrukh's offerings are not for average tournament players but for those at the FIDE 2000 level and above. I am a FIDE 2200 player and was looking to retool my black response to 1.d4. On occasion I play an IM, and often FMs, and I am sure that the level of analysis offering by Avrukh in his Grunfeld series will equip me adequately for such opposition. This is a repertoire book in the strict sense so you will need to be active in your updating of the suggested lines and from time to time my decide to go in a different direction from the suggestion lines. Overall the suggestions are for a solid and active defence and any white player that is only generally prepared to face the Grunfeld will struggle. There is not much in the way of general commentary here -hence my suggestion that it is best suited for expert/master level and above.

This little book was a life saver during my MPA program. It is a nice quick reference companion to the full 6th edition APA manual. I had some great professors who were sticklers for proper APA use.. This book highlights most common needs and helps you quickly find what you need. You will still need a more comprehensive book for obscure or super technical APA stuff.
