Felled by Feller?

I came across Vol 1 as a maths student in the 1970s. Indeed, the book was suggested to me by a quantum physicist recommended for the Nobel Prize in 1965 (John Ward, now deceased)- Feynman, Schwinger and Tomonaga shared the prize.

This is a difficult book and was not widely used even in the 70s as a textbook. I can recall the word "idiosyncratic" being used by someone to describe the book. The problem is that the book seeks to address deep issues and that requires hard work. It is not the sort of book a struggling student will find helpful. As one matures as a mathematician one can appreciate the incredible depth of the material. As a practical example - about 30 years after I first touched this book a Head of Quant approached me in relation to a paper by Marsaglia on distributions of ratios of normal variates. The verification of Marsgalia's derivation (which is non-trivial) is to be found as a series of 3 problems in Vol 1.

With the development of stochastic calculus in the finance world Feller can look a bit outdated but if you can understand the core material you are doing well. Stochastic calculus would be a push over.

Vols 1 and 2 present a treasure trove for those who want to delve into the area. I still use Feller's coin tossing example from Vol 1 to demonstrate to those in the finance world that their understanding of the "law of averages" is imperfect.

The funny thing is that Vol 2 (which I could never afford as a student) is so hard to get. I think that was because Vol 2 was regarded as even more obscure than Vol 1. I got a copy from Amazon second hand and it is now united with its twin in my study.

Build intuitions and understanding

This book is a true classic on probability using frequentist approach. It's full of wisdom! Unlike contemporary books that give quick formulas, this classic is dense and presents a slower learning experience. Its emphasis is on deep understanding and analysis instead of merely performing calculations. There are lots of interesting examples that help build up the reader's intuitions that can last. For example, its explanations on Poisson distribution is one of the best I've come across. It should be every scientist's reference book.

If you could only ever buy one book on probability, this would be the one!

Feller's elegant and lateral approach to the essential elements of probability theory and their application to many diverse and apparently unrelated contexts is head-noddingly inspiring.

Working your way through all the exercises in the book would be an excellent retirment diversion sure to stave off the onset of dementia.

Each of our experiences with our social environment raises a host of questions. What are the sources and consequences of kindness and cruelty? Why and how are people susceptible to the influence of others? How do we develop and maintain our relationships with other individuals? How do people come to grips with the meaning of their social environment? How does our culture influence our behavior?

The discipline of social psychology addresses such questions. Embracing a vast range of human behavior, the field seeks to answer the fundamental issues that underlie our social world. It is a discipline that holds the promise of providing real improvements in the human condition.

The central challenge in writing an introduction to social psychology is to capture the essence of a dynamic, ever-changing discipline. A comprehensive and balanced view of a complex field.

As a university psychology instructor who favors a text demonstrating good science, I appreciate the careful documentation of research contained in this book. I also appreciate the personal touch of the anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter as a way of making the subject matter relevant to students. The authors do a masterful job of presenting a complex field, such as social psychology, to the college student. Teaching psychology as a science is a real challenge today and this text offers instructors a powerful tool for that purpose.

I highly recommend "Social Psychology" to practically any adult who can read. We are social beings and understanding each other helps us to create better relations. A better world. This book is excellent to examine and understand not only others' behavior but also ours.
Here is an excerpt that caught my attention: "how we interpret, analyze, remember, and use information about the social world-suggests that we are far from perfect in our ability to think clearly about other persons and reach accurate decisions or judgments about them."
"Social Psychology" covers many branches of psychology but the chapters give you enough information to learn just the basics. I think that this is great for lay people or new students in Psychology. I found that the personal stories that both authors used, helped me to better understand the topic of the chapters; however the, I met this psychologist and have been friends with since, led me to believe that this reaction was due to a schema. Perhaps our society has created a schema in which others' names define who we are. I particularly don't sympathize much with this.
The colorful pictures and cartoons in the book, I enjoyed greatly. I tend to be very visual in many occasions. In fact, I feel that many of the pictures were more thought provoking than the text. I found them very helpful to understand the subject. I also sensed that the targeted audience was mainly young students since many of the studies were conducted or focused on young students. I just wished that the authors had not forgotten that there are older people (like this book reviewer) who go back to school or who want to learn about social psychology. Once again, I highly recommend this book to anyone. You'll learn to view the world under a new perspective.

excellent book for a curious student in social psychology

I read several chapters from this book before I took a social psychology course, and saw that it was indeed very helpful. The author uses a lot of examples, which makes the concepts understandable. Also, the narrative text of the book is very high in quality according to me. It's pure, understandable, friendly and in harmony. (Look at the Franzoi's 1st edition: You will understand what I mean by no-harmony). I strongly believe that to write such a good book should have taken much time for the author. In addition, the author most probably had had an empathetic approach to understand the needs of the student and write accordingly. I don't mean to harm or criticize in any way those that made negative comments on this book. Nevertheless, let me convey you my opinion. According to me, using "I", the author only intended to provide a warm atmosphere to the student sharing his experiences and understandings. But, this is a way to encourage the student think of his/her own experiences in real life, which causes the assimilation of the knowledge more effectively. It's not to advertise himself(author), as far as I perceived from the book. Another thing is that, in psychology, phenomena that seem not logical to a human eye may be significant in a statistical sense. Very small differences, after the elimination of the error margin, may still be significant and therefore, meaningful. In the book, there are graphs not starting from the 0 point, and thus the difference may appear larger when looking superficially. Nonetheless, when looking carefully, undoing the illusory magnification, still the difference is observed, and I believe that the author made focus on the significant part of the graph to draw the attention of the reader and to make him understand better and easier. According to me, this is a good feature of the book and intention of the author.

About the Author
Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her 12 years as an editor at Benjamin Cummings, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is lead author of Campbell Biology   and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .
 
Martha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for over 35 years. She earned her B.A. in biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in science education from Cornell University. She was assistant director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University and is currently a lecturer in the Learning Strategies Center teaching supplemental biology courses. Based on her experiences working with students in classrooms, laboratories, and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all nine editions of Campbell Biology .
 
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .
 
Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in an advanced biology course. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology   and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

WELL WRITTEN AND CONCISE BIOLOGY TEXT

BIOLOGY Concepts and Connections, by Campbell, Reece, Taylor, Simon and Dickey is a very well written college text book on the study of life on earth.

The book is well illustrated with hundreds of diagrams, charts and photos which make the text easier to understand.

All classes of biologic life are discussed in detail and I especially liked the chapters on Evolution and human Evolution which are sometimes glossed over in works by other authors.

The study of life on earth covers a vast range in subject matter, thus having a multitude of authors ensures expertise over a broader range of subjects.

This, the 6th edition 2009 is new enough for all but the most serious studies. It is vastly superior to the college biology texts that I used when in college in the 1950s. It can also be obtained for only a fraction of the cost of newer editions.

Wheather a student or anyone else interested in the nature of life on earth, this book will provide a wealth of knowledge and understanding.

Acces card not activated

Even the book was new the acces card said that it was expired,I called directly to Pearson and the book was not register so I could not use the card and had to buy a new acces card with an extra cost

Awesome purchase!

Great book! Bought it used from Amazon Warehouse Deals and was a little worried at what quality I would get since it said "Acceptable" condition. None the less, the book I received is brand new! It was actually still wrapped in foil when I got it. I looked through it and it seems no one has ever used it, the pages are blank and look unused. I already pretty much knew I wouldn't receive a MasteringBiology access code and was planning on buying one (no biggie), but as I was flipping through the book I found an unopened one! It was completely sealed and the code still covered up (you have to scratch the area in order to see your code). I haven't used it yet since I bought the book for the upcoming fall semester but I will sure do so once it starts. I couldn't be more happy with my decision to buy used. I received a brand new $200+ textbook (at my college bookstore) for under $70!

Excellent Condition and Speedy Delivery, Great read too

So I completed this course last semester along with mother baby. I truly enjoyed reading this book. Psychologically, this book touches on the development of children in a way that I have never thought about prior to reading this book. It is a very informative text and I not only recommend it for nursing school, but for just an interesting read. So now on to the important stuff, does this book help you to pass the end of term HESI. Hm...I am not exactly sure, I didn't do that great on the HESI, but I did feel as though I learned a great deal from the course. Another thing, the instructor for the course had us skipping chapters and she picked and chose the content that she wanted us to read, which probably did more harm than good. Despite that, I did do well in the class overall, the content questions on EVOLVE truly help you to understand the text content.

helping me better grapple with the complexities of a friendship-turned-romantic

"A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara tells the story of Jude St. Francis and his messed up life. Tragedy after tragedy happen to him, making his life more and more miserable. This review, while outlining the important parts of the story, was enough for me. There is no way I could get through such a depressing novel. Instaread summarized the narrative, and gave insights and analysis into the main characters and the themes of "A Little Life."

This review described the relationship of Jude and Willem in a profound way, helping me better grapple with the complexities of a friendship-turned-romantic. Willem and Jude, while romantically involved, never considered it homosexual, which blows my mind, and somehow brought new layers of complexity to their evolving relationship. Instaread's analysis of the theme of disability was also captivating, bringing out the stigma of dependency attached to disability.

This review is great for those, like me, who are looking for a deeper look into a NYT Bestseller before giving it a go. I was given a copy to review.

Sad Story, but Well Written

This is a summary of "A Little Life" and is not the original book. If you are debating on whether or not to read the original book, I highly recommend this summary. This book is extremely depressing, and is not my taste, but the reason I love Instaread reviews is for that very purpose. Instead of spending the time/money reading the original, I can look at this summary and decide if it's something I would like to read in the future. This book is about a boy named Jude's VERY troubled life. In addition to an overview of the book's plot, this summary analyzes the main characters and their relationships and addresses the book's themes. It is well written and easy to follow. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

but when it comes to smart locks or wall plugs

Informative if you've never heard of HomeKit before, but as an implementation guide, it's not very helpful. There are three or four examples on pairing a HomeKit enabled device to an iPhone or iPad, but nothing on how to do it with an AppleTV. Triggers are mentioned, but nothing on how to set one is given. This version also seems rather dated, as AppleTV references are to generation 3, not 4. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple hasn't released a HomeKit app for the 3rd generation AppleTV, and without an example of how to use HomeKit with a G3 AppleTV, the book's once again no help at all. The book also makes no mention of the recently released iOS10 Home app for iPhone/iPad, which acts as a central control app for all HomeKit enabled devices. Instead we're told we need a third party app to do this, but there's no recommendation on which one. Which brings up another shortcoming: there's very little specific information with regard to particular apps or devices. The Philips Hue bulbs are mentioned, but when it comes to smart locks or wall plugs, there's nothing.

The "book" (and I use the term loosely) is very short and is not much more than an overview. I got through the whole thing in about fifteen minutes. I read it from the Cloud using the amazon Kindle web site, and found the pages badly formatted, with text repeating itself between columns, and sometimes text was missing between pages. Just another thing that led to the poor rating.

Since I'm brand new to HomeKit, I'd hoped that this "book" would save me a lot of stumbling around trying to locate information I can use to start my home automation implementation. I'm very disappointed to say that it does not, and does little more than help familiarize me with the jargon involved. Hopefully these shortcomings will be addressed in the next edition?
