In 1939 the Jewish population of Romania exceeded 750,000: the third largest concentration of Jews in Europe. By 1944, some 400,000 had disappeared. Another 150,000 Ukrainian Jews died at the hands of Romanian soldiers. In the quest for a final solution Romania proved to be Hitler's most enthusiastic ally.

In The Silent Holocaust, Butnaru, himself a survivor of the Romanian labor camps, provides a full account and demonstrates that anti-Semitism was a central force in Romania's history. He begins by examining the precarious status of Romanian Jewry in the years prior to World War I. He then reviews the period to the establishment in September, 1940, of the National Legionary State, a period when anti-Semitism became the unifying force in politics. The remainder of the book covers the Holocaust years, and reveals that Romania's premeditated mass murder of Jews was well underway before the Reich's gas chambers became operational. The Silent Holocaust has been called a work of epic and historical worth and it is invaluable for students of World War II, the Holocaust, and Jewish and Eastern European studies.

About the Author

I. C. BUTNARU was in a Romanian labor camp during World War II and lectures on the Holocaust and the arts at Boston University. He was a member of the Society of Romanian Writers. Forbidden to write freely on political issues in Communist Romania, he immigrated to the United States in 1974. He is the author of five earlier books.

Great for Starting Out in Higher Positions

If you're starting out learning third position, as I am, this is just your speed. It starts out very easy, then gets progressively more difficult. I'm still in the beginning of the book, so can't comment on the later sections, but I'm enjoying the pieces, switching back and forth between playing them in first and third positions to see how much easier it can be in the higher position.

Excellent overview of vocal mechanism

The book gives a comprehensive look at all the physiological aspects of singing, including the mechanisms of breathing, phonation, and resonance. It also addresses posture, anatomy of the larynx, and other related topics. It is a great book for anyone planning to teach any type of singing. I also recommend McKinney's Diagnoses and Corrections of Vocal Faults as a companion book.

Dry but informative.

This is a must-have for singers and vocal teachers. I had to buy it in college for a class. Now as a teacher, I use the anatomical charts to show students and I re-read chapters based on my need. The only reason that it gets 4 starts and not 5 is that it is just so very dry. I think a new edition is in desperate need!

For years, I have been delving into culture, science, philosophy, history and bit of The School of Life; so I bought this book. I had before read extensively about many of the thinkers mentioned, and yet this book still offered unique instruction and entertainment. The fluid selection of themes, people, and ideas seem aimed to inspire the reader by suggesting, with tools and examples, an active engagement with oneself and the world; so it serves more for orienting oneself than piecemeal reference. I imagine this will be especially good for people who did not have time for eclectic self-exposure and for those with a practical ability to profoundly act. And, although there is definitely room for a new edition/s, I am reminded why some books should be reread.

This book should be an essential part of children's education. It shows that great minds have already thought about what it is to be human and how to accomplish a good and happy life. Philosophy should be taught by parents and teachers so that there is a better way to gain understanding of what actually is important and not be manipulated by the pressures of modern life.

This is almost like a liberal arts degree in book form

This is almost like a liberal arts degree in book form. It covers many of the important thinkers who shaped western thought and culture. I did not agree with some of the personalities who represented the last 75 years, but that is to be expected and could lead to some pleasant debates.

I particularly disagree with some of the visual artists who were included and most of the architects. Both modern artists and modern architects suffer from the same obsession with selfish expression. They have abandoned the continuity from the past that tethered art and architecture to the beautiful. Their art and architecture is all about them and no one else. So much of it is like witnessing a grown up masturbate. The artist and architect gets off but everyone else is left horrified.
